BOARD CHAIR POSITION
Organization Summary
Founded in 2014, My Very Own Bed provides new beds, linens, and “Dream Kits” (stuffed animals, books, pillows, etc.) to children of families who have recently secured stable housing in the Twin Cities. By providing beds and Dream Kits to kids who need them, we help families get one step closer to thriving in their new homes, making them more livable and restful. A good night’s sleep in a child’s very own bed is tied to better academic and behavioral outcomes for children.

Primary Duties
The Board Chair provides strategic leadership as well as programmatic and financial oversight for the organization.
The MVOB Board of Directors is a governing board of committed volunteers who contribute their time at board and committee meetings, assist in handling organization administration, and volunteer in support of the organization at various events.
The Board Chair serves a three-year term and is expected to:

Provide leadership to the board, who sets policy and to whom the Executive Director is held accountable.

Support financial and resource planning and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations as well as understanding and identifying any conflicts of interest.

Direct the board's role in strategic planning and organizational priorities.

Develop a strong professional relationship with the Executive Director.

Communicate with the Executive Director regularly (frequency and method to be established).

Check in with board members regularly and on an ad-hoc basis as needed.

Formally evaluate the performance of the Executive Director and the Board.

Be actively involved in fundraising and communicating to the community and donors the mission of My Very Own Bed
Regular expectations and duties:

Create Agenda with the Executive Director prior to meetings.

Preside over quarterly board meetings with an emphasis on making sure they are focused and productive.

Engage in regular online communication between meetings with board members and employees as needed.

Partner with board members to lead planning of our annual fundraising event (several meetings per year plus individual time to complete tasks).

Stay informed about committee activities, prepare for meetings, and review meeting minutes.

Build collegial working relationships with board members, staff, and donors and help resolve any conflicts that arise.

Utilize skills, relationships. and knowledge for the advancement of MVOB.

Be involved in recruiting and on-boarding new board members, and when feasible, facilitating ongoing board education and development.

Volunteer 2-3 times a year delivering beds.
In particular, My Very Own Bed seeks a Board Chair with strategic planning experience and/or previous experience serving as a board chair. Business, legal, and advertising experience preferred and work with people experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, or direct experience with homelessness is a plus.
