Delivery Assistant

Position Overview: The Delivery Assistant at My Very Own Bed is a vital member of our dream delivery team, reporting to the Program Manager. They support the delivery of new mattresses, bed frames and dream kits (our hand-packed kit including bedding, books, and stuffed animals) to children throughout the Twin Cities metro area. They work very closely with our volunteers and help lead volunteer activities related to our bed delivery program. The Delivery Assistant also helps as a back-up driver when needed, so they must have the experience to drive a sixteen-foot box truck.

Schedule & Availability: This is a part-time, paid position, with about 20-25 hours per week. Hours include Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, with occasional Saturdays to support bed delivery activities. Additionally, this role has about 5 hours of administrative and warehouse support work per week, which can be flexible within our core business hours.

Location: This position is based out of our office/warehouse in northeast Minneapolis (34 13th Ave NE, Suite 106, Minneapolis, MN 55413), with bed delivery throughout the Twin Cities metro area.

Key Responsibilities:
 

Overall support for bed & dream kit deliveries

  • Load the truck with twin-size mattresses and platform bed frames

  • Help the Dream Driver facilitate bed deliveries in a safe and timely manner with our volunteer groups

  • Help build relationships with volunteers and guide them in positive, respectful interactions with all families and children

  • When needed, serve as a backup truck driver for bed deliveries

  • Help maintain the cleanliness of the delivery truck by cleaning cab and box


In Office Volunteer Support

  • Lead groups of volunteers for frame building and blanket rolling in our office

  • Assist with the volunteer welcome and introduction presentation
     

Office & Warehouse Miscellaneous Assistance

  • Assemble platform bed frames when needed

  • Inventory Dream Kit items received using donation drop off forms

  • Dusting/cleaning surfaces

  • Sweeping/mopping floor

  • Breaking down cardboard boxes and take out trash

  • Organizing and stocking book cart

  • Restocking Dream Kit Item Shelves

  • Fold, Roll, and Bag fleece tie blankets
     

Assist with social media content creation

  • With their consent, we will take photos of volunteers at work for use in our marketing and social media campaigns

  • Occasionally, post short videos or photos to My Very Own Bed’s social media “stories” that capture appropriate moments during bed deliveries
     

Skills & Qualifications:
 

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and experience driving larger trucks

  • 2-3 years of experience driving and operating larger delivery vehicles

  • Fitness to pass a Department of Transportation physical

  • Ability to regularly climb up and down stairs while carrying up to 40 pounds

  • Regularly access low/high spaces at irregular angles, such as reaching high/low shelves and stacking and moving large objects

  • Ability to climb in and out of a truck to load and unload mattresses and bed frames

  • Demonstrated cultural competency, including experience working respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and families who have experienced homelessness or housing instability

  • Understanding of and commitment to My Very Own Bed’s mission, vision, and values

  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality

  • Excellent team player who can collaborate with a team and also work independently

  • Strong oral communication skills and ability to engage warmly and respectfully with coworkers, volunteers, and families

  • Personal experience with homelessness or other life challenges similar to those experienced by our program participants is valued

  • Proficiency in Spanish or Karen is helpful but not required
     

Pay & Benefits:

  • Pay rate of $23 per hour

  • Paid sick time, accrued at 1 sick time hour per every 40 hours worked

  • 40 hours of paid vacation time per year, available after 3 months of service

  • Paid holidays as a part-time employee

  • Eligibility for medical insurance reimbursement through the organization's ICHRA plan
